Injured tooth

An injured tooth is typically not a dental emergency- unless you have significant bleeding or pain associated with it. However, you should still contact your dentist immediately to have it taken care of. If not, you could end up with a lot more damage and may even end up losing the tooth completely.

There are several reasons your teeth may break:

In some cases, if you act quickly, you may be able to save your natural tooth. If the tooth simply has surface chips/cracks, the dentist can fix it with dental bonding or a filling. Cracks/fractures that extend beyond the gum line are harder to repair and may require a root canal or extraction and/or a crown/implant.

If you have an infection in your broken tooth, it can spread to the surrounding tissue and jawbone- and can even get into your bloodstream if not treated quickly. In some cases, the infection can be treated, and the tooth saved. In other cases, nothing can be done, and extraction will be recommended. If the tooth can't be saved, there are plenty of options: implants, bridges, crowns, etc.
