Mouth sores are common and can affect anyone, regardless of age. Most of the time, they are harmless and will clear up on their own. However, sometimes, they indicate more serious issues. Treatment of mouth sores will depend on what caused it to begin with.
Common causes of mouth sores range from injuries to serious health conditions. Some of these causes are:
Brushing teeth too hard
Biting tongue, cheek, or lip
Irritation from orthodontic devices such as braces
Burns from hot foods/beverages
Hand, foot, and mouth disease
These are just a few of the potential causes of mouth sores. In addition, some patients develop mouth sores when they are going through radiation or chemo for cancer.
When is it an emergency?
If you have a mouth sore, it's a good idea to contact an emergency dentist. Most of the time, they will go away on their own within a few days. However, if it does not clear up in about a week, you need to see a dentist.
This is especially true if the sore is extremely painful and OTC medications or at-home treatments are not working. It's important to note that sometimes a sore may be deep and take longer to heal. If you frequently have sores and have a hard time eating or swallowing or experience fever and swelling with the sore, you need to see a dentist.
There are some at-home treatments you can use to treat your mouth sores while you're waiting to get into the dentist:
Dissolve an antacid in your mouth
50/50 hydrogen peroxide/water with baking soda and salt
Warm saltwater rinse
